NextSport Transfers – Tottenham Hotspur faces a significant dilemma in the upcoming January transfer window regarding the future of their striker, Dominic Solanke. Despite a challenging season plagued by injuries, prematurely offloading the £60 million signing could prove to be a costly mistake for the North London club.

Solanke’s Initial Impact and Current Struggles

Solanke’s arrival at Tottenham was met with high expectations, and he initially delivered, showcasing his goal-scoring prowess and creative abilities. In his debut season, he notched an impressive 16 goals and provided eight assists in 45 appearances, becoming a key figure in Spurs’ Europa League campaign, which somewhat overshadowed their underwhelming Premier League performance.

However, the current season has been a stark contrast. An ankle injury has severely hampered Solanke’s progress, limiting his appearances and preventing him from building any momentum. Since playing a mere 12 minutes in the victory against Manchester City in August, he has been sidelined, fueling speculation about his future at the club.

Coach’s Impression and Transfer Rumors

Reports suggest that new head coach Thomas Frank has been less than impressed with Solanke, further intensifying the rumors of a potential January exit. It is believed that Spurs are considering bringing in a new forward during the winter transfer window to bolster their attacking options. However, securing a quality frontman mid-season is notoriously difficult, adding another layer of complexity to the situation.

Premature Judgement and Potential Rebound

While the allure of fresh firepower is understandable, writing off Solanke based on a single injury-ridden season would be a rash decision. Prior to his injury, he was a consistent performer, demonstrating his value to the team with crucial goals and assists. Furthermore, other attacking players like Richarlison, Mathys Tel, and Randal Kolo Muani have also struggled to find the net consistently, highlighting the team’s overall attacking woes.

Frank’s Optimism and Solanke’s Opportunity

Amidst the uncertainty, there is a glimmer of hope. Coach Frank has indicated that Solanke is making positive strides in his recovery, suggesting that he could soon be back in contention for a starting role. Given the inconsistent performances of his positional rivals, Solanke has a golden opportunity to reclaim his place in the team and solidify his status as a key player for Tottenham.

Contractual Considerations and Future Prospects

With five years remaining on his £175,000-a-week contract, moving Solanke on would be a significant financial undertaking for any potential suitor. Moreover, his previous season’s output demonstrates his capabilities when fit and firing. While Tottenham may need to offload players to make room for new signings, parting ways with Solanke, especially after just one challenging season, appears to be a premature and potentially damaging move. Spurs should give him the chance to prove his worth upon his return from injury.
